Speedway Soccer was able to sit down with Hany Mukhtar, the first Designated Player in Nashville SC history, at the 104.5 The Zone studios on Music Row. You can watch our interview below or listen to the full podcast here.
Davey Shepherd: First of all, welcome to Nashville! How have your first few days in Nashville been?
Hany Mukhtar: Yeah, it's been great! Nashville's a nice city. I'm looking forward to spend more time here in Nashville.
DS: Is this your first time in Nashville?
HM: Yeah, it's my first time in the US!
DS: So what excites you about coming to play in MLS in general but specifically Nashville Soccer Club?
HM: Yeah, Nashville is coming up in January to the MLS and I'm really looking forward to play with my teammates and join the league. It's a big league, developing very fast, and it's a great opportunity for me. I'm really looking forward.
DS: How long of a process has it been for you [to finalize the move to Nashville]?
HM: A couple of months. It was a long discussion also with my old club - I'm still in Brøndby for the next few months and it was tough to come here, but now I'm really happy to be here. It's great.
DS: Have you been able to watch any of Nashville's games since you started the process of talking with the club?
HM: I haven't watched a game for 90 minutes but I watched the highlights. The last game where the scored in the last minute was really great. I'm informing myself, but the time difference makes it pretty difficult to watch the games because it's pretty late. But I have plenty of time to see games.
DS: With ESPN+, we'll be able to play with Brøndby for the rest of the year, so you'll have plenty of fans on this side of the Atlantic as well.
HM: That's great. All Nashville fans, I'm really happy to be here and it's really nice to be a Nashville player soon.
Jonathan Slape: Have you had a chance to watch many MLS games?
HM: Yeah, now it's on The Zone in Germany, so I've watched some games. Of course when Zlatan came I was really interested to see the league. It's developing very well and I'm looking forward [to it].
DS: How would you describe yourself as a player?
HM: I always like when other people describe me. But if I would describe me, I'm an offensive midfield player. I'm creative. I open the space for other players and make other players look better. Scoring goals and making assists if possible.
DS: I always like to ask 10s this - would you rather score the goal or get the assist?
HM: Difficult question. In the past years I've had more assists, but I also like to celebrate my goals.
DS: Is there a player who you wanted to emulate as a kid?
HM: Absolutely - Zidane.
DS: Is there a message you want to leave for the fans?
HM: I just want to let them know I'm really excited to be here and I'm looking forward to our adventure, to compete in MLS and build a strong team and build a strong culture and a winning mentality in the club!
Huge thanks to Hany for taking the time to talk with us. You can watch Hany and Brøndby IF the rest of this season in the Danish Superliga on ESPN+. Their next match is against FC Midtjylland this Sunday at 11:00 AM.
