NASHVILLE, TN - Nashville SC announced Tuesday the signing of defender Dave Romney from LA Galaxy for $250,000 in General Allocation Money plus an additional $50,000 GAM if Romney meets certain performance-based metrics. Romney is the second player Nashville have announced in the MLS trade window, with Dax McCarty joining earlier Tuesday morning.
“Dave’s combination of athleticism and decision-making on both sides of the ball, coupled with being naturally left-sided, made him someone that we appreciated very early on in this process,” said Nashville SC GM Mike Jacobs. “We believe that he is someone that could really flourish in our system with both a consistent role and a regular run of games.”
“I’m incredibly excited to be involved in Nashville SC’s inaugural MLS season,” said Romney. “It’s such a unique experience. You are at the ground floor of shaping what the club’s legacy will be for years to come. It’s something I’ve always been intrigued about doing and I couldn’t be happier that it’s in an amazing city with such a passionate fanbase.”
Romney is a versatile defender, able to play as both a center back and a left back. He was the first LA Galaxy II player to sign an MLS contract, joining LA Galaxy in 2015. Romney was a regular starter in 2017 and 2018, playing 57 matches and 4,601 minutes in those two seasons. However, Romney found playing time harder to come by under new manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto, playing in just 12 matches in 2019 and largely performing in a substitute role.
At 6'2", Romney is a typical aerial threat from set pieces, and he's very comfortable in possession. He doesn't always play through the lines, but he's secure with the ball and is capable of a more ambitious pass at times.
He's a smart positional defender, and puts himself in good spots to win the ball, even when joining the attack as a fullback. From Jacobs' quote above and the amount of allocation money the club is giving up to get him, it seems like he's in for a more consistent starting role with Nashville. Whether that's on the left or in the center remains to be seen, but he's a solid addition for a team that is very purposefully building a strong defense.
