Power Rankings Week 31

This method of ranking team performance factors in point per game, strength of schedule, and goal difference. This isn't an attempt to predict the final table, but rather a way to measure a team's form over the course of the season.

  1. NYRB II (↔): Beaten 2-0 on the road by North Carolina, despite taking 25 shots and having 66% possession. Four matches without a win, and getting close to dropping out of the top spot.

  2. Tampa Bay Rowdies (↔): Beaten 2-0 on the road by Loudoun.

  3. Pittsburgh Riverhounds (↔): Beat Loudoun on the road midweek, before giving up a late equalizer to Atlanta at home.

  4. Nashville SC (↔): No match this week.

  5. North Carolina FC (↑1): Clinched a playoff berth with a massive result at home against New York to jump ahead of a struggling Indy Eleven side.

  6. Indy Eleven (↓1): Lost their third straight match against Ottawa midweek before rebounding with a 3-0 win over Memphis. They've really failed to take advantage of their games in hand.

  7. Louisville City FC (↔): Controlled nearly two thirds of the possession and held on for a gritty 1-0 win in Saint Louis to gain ground on Indy.

  8. Ottawa Fury FC (↔): Picked up a huge three points at home over New York to give themselves some breathing room in the playoff race.

  9. Saint Louis FC (↔): Dropped points at home to a resolute Louisville side. Just two points clear of dropping out of a playoff spot.

  10. Charleston Battery (↔): Held on for a draw in Birmingham, despite playing the final 30 minutes with 10 men.

  11. Birmingham Legion FC (↔): Had a huge opportunity to move into a playoff spot, but couldn't take advantage of a 10-man Charleston Battery at home.

  12. Memphis 901 FC (↔): Beaten 3-0 by Indy Eleven on the road. Still alive in the playoff race, but really can't afford to drop any points in their remaining three matches.

  13. Charlotte Independence (↔): Knocked Bethlehem out of playoff contention with a 2-1 win. Already eliminated from playoff contention, fans will be encouraged with the performance, getting the winner despite playing with 10 men for 60+ minutes.

  14. Loudoun United FC (↔): Put in a very impressive performance to beat Tampa Bay Rowdies at home, creating several solid chances and keeping the Rowdies off the scoresheet.

  15. Bethlehem Steel (↔): Officially eliminated from the playoffs, although it had been inevitable for a while. Their performance against Charlotte summed up their season quite nicely.

  16. Swope Park Rangers (↔): Drew 2-2 at home against Hartford.

  17. Atlanta United 2 (↔): Couldn't get the win they needed to stay alive in the playoff race, but did put a dent in Pittsburgh's bid for first place with a 1-1 draw on the road.

  18. Hartford Athletic (↔): Held to a 2-2 draw in Kansas City by fellow basement dwellers Swope Park.

  1. Phoenix Rising FC (↔): Got a 5-3 win on the road over Portland to come within two points of FC Cincinnati's single-season point record. With two games left to play, it looks like they'll beat it.

  2. Reno 1868 FC (↔): Held to a 0-0 draw at home by El Paso, but hold onto second place with a decent cushion.

  3. Fresno FC (↔): Lost on the road to El Paso and at home to Tacoma. After appearing to be a lock for most of the season, they're looking in danger of missing out on a home playoff match. Two losses was the last thing an already anxious fanbase needed.

  4. Sacramento Republic FC (↔): Gave up a late equalizer to Los Dos before getting a weekend win over Tulsa to officially clinch a playoff spot.

  5. Real Monarchs SLC (↔): No match this week.

  6. Orange County SC (↑1): Clinched a playoff spot with a 2-0 win over OKC Energy.

  7. San Antonio FC (↓1): Solidly beaten on the road by a Las Vegas side desperate for points.

  8. El Paso Locomotive FC (↑3): El Paso had arguably the best week in USL, beating Fresno and drawing with Reno to keep pace with a really tight middle of the pack.

  9. New Mexico United (↓1): Held to a draw at home by a really poor RGV Toros side.

  10. Austin Bold FC (↔): No match this week.

  11. LA Galaxy II (↓1): Drew with Sacramento and lost to Colorado Springs to give their playoff hopes a dent. With the race for the final few spots as tight as it is, they can't afford to drop points.

  12. Portland Timbers 2 (↔): Beaten at home by a far superior Phoenix side in a match that wasn't nearly as close as the scoreline would suggest.

  13. Las Vegas Lights FC (↑1): Kept their playoff hopes alive with a 4-2 win over San Antonio at home.

  14. OKC Energy (↓1): Went down to 10 men in the first half and couldn't recover, losing 2-0 to Orange County at home.

  15. Rio Grande Valley FC (↔): Officially out of playoff contention, but played spoiler this week, holding New Mexico to a 1-1 draw on the road.

  16. Tulsa Roughnecks FC (↔): Beaten 3-2 at home by a superior Sacramento Republic side.

  17. CS Switchbacks FC (↔): Pulled off a really surprising 2-0 win over Los Angeles at home.

  18. Tacoma Defiance (↔): The worst side in the West by some margin, but showed up with a surprisingly convincing performance, beating Fresno 4-1 on the road, despite being outshot 25 to nine.

Here's how the playoff race is shaping up. Included are three columns: current points, projected points based on home/away ppg, and maximum possible points. The playoff line indicates the required current points needed to have clinched a playoff spot, and the elimination line indicates that a side's maximum points are less than the current points of at least 10 sides.
