CARY, NC - Nashville's unbeaten streak ended at seven on Saturday night, as the Boys In Gold fell 1-0 to a North Carolina side that has taken the league by surprise.
Head coach Gary Smith sent out a side that was nearly identical to the team he put out against New York on Wednesday before the match was abandoned. Bolu Akinyode and Michael Reed played behind a front three of Lebo Moloto, Daniel Ríos and Cameron Lancaster.
Despite the firepower in Nashville's frontline, the visitors struggled to create in the opening half, only managing four shots to North Carolina's seven. NCFC took the lead in the 30th minute, with Ben Speas finishing off a counter attacking move from close range.
After the break, Nashville were much improved, dominating possession and creating plenty of chances. Lancaster and Ríos each had looks on goal, and Ropapa Mensah continued to find space in the final third after he came on in the 77th minute.
Ultimately, though, it wasn't enough from Nashville, as the 1-0 scoreline held. It was Nashville's first loss in seven league matches, and sees them drop into 5th place in the East, one point behind North Carolina. Their next match is on the road against 7th placed Louisville City FC on Saturday.
