NASHVILLE, TN - Nashville SC's Ropapa Mensah has been named to Ghana's 21-man squad for the 2019 CAF Cup of Nations. Coach Ibrahim Tanko's side will kick off their campaign against Cameroon on November 8, and will round out their group stage with matches against Egypt on November 11 and Mali on November 14.
Nashville SC are currently in the USL Championship Eastern Conference playoffs. Were they to win on Saturday against Indy Eleven, they would play in the Eastern Conference final on November 9. Speedway Soccer has confirmed with the club that Mensah will not be released for international duty until their season has concluded, either with elimination in the playoffs or a USL Championship Final win on Sunday, November 17. Mensah would then be free to join his international side late into their campaign.Mensah joins a roster comprised largely of domestic players, as well as players from La Liga in Spain, Primera Liga in Portugal, and the Eridivisie in the Netherlands.
Mensah joins a long list of Nashville SC players with international experience.
Lebo Moloto (South Africa U17)
Alan Winn (USA U18)
Bolu Akinyode (Nigeria U13, USA U20)
Ropapa Mensah (Ghana U23)
Daniel Ríos (Mexico U20)
Derrick Jones (USA U23)
David Accam (Ghana)
Aníbal Godoy (Panama)
Hany Mukhtar (Germany U19, U21)
Randall Leal (Costa Rica)
With Nashville set to debut in Major League Soccer in 2020, the call up seems likely to boost Mensah's chances of making the jump to the next level. The club purchased his rights from Inter Allies in Ghana after a successful loan spell in 2018, and the involvement on the international level will boost his transfer value. Combined with his impressive form to close out the regular season, Mensah certainly is making a case to be included in Nashville SC's future plans.
